"MOST" Environment

The model seems to be a great way to support at risk students. It also seems to be a good way to have students review and retell what they have learned. Additionally, I like the idea of adding in the computer-based "tutees" that present what-if questions that promote reflection. However, I could see this model being difficult to design because it has so many features. Teachers would have to create the initial presentation and then provide students with tools to use to retell the story presented. I think by keeping it simple, these barriers could be overcome. I think it might be a good idea to begin by making a short presentation and see how it works, and then changing what you came up with based on the results of the first one carried out in the classroom.

I would attempt to use this model with my future students. I really like how it incorporates the visual aspect, and doesn't solely rely on the verbal aspect of learning. I think it would be fun to create a video for students to watch about a story and then have them use a web-based tool to retell it. Like I said, I would give them a shorter story to retell first, and see how they do with putting it back together. I think this model would be a good way for students to show that they have mastered understanding of the reading, and also a good way for students to show chronological events in the order that they happened in the story.

I think several web-based tools can be used when carrying out this model in the classroom. I think teachers could use a website creator to make the presentation. Teachers could also embed Youtube or Teachertube videos into the website. They could then have students present the information from the story to them using Prezi (presentation creator) or even Bitstrip (comic strip creator).

  1. I think the abundance of tools are available to support this model. You mentioned some great ideas about students being able to note chronological events in the story. Sequencing is a problematic area for a lot of students. This is another strategy that could be used to reinforce the content read.

  2. I think your idea of starting with a "shorter story" would be a great place to start. I can see these MOST models being organized by reading ability, instead of by grade level. I wonder if these MOST models should be built at a school district level, to use at all schools. Why have each teacher design their own. It might be a cool idea of creating a pool of these resources at a district or state level, that teachers can pull from to help their at-risk students.

  3. I like when you said the MOST model, "incorporates the visual aspect, and doesn't solely rely on the verbal aspect of learning. I think it would be fun to create a video for students to watch about a story and then have them use a web-based tool to retell it" -- I agree 100%

And if you and I think this would be fun, just think how fun the kids would find it. We are the teachers, the facilitators. The kids get to actually do this. It could be funny and fun at the same time. I picture you having the kids retell the story from the perspective of someone like Bart Simpson or Stewy (someone the kids find funny). This would be a blast and the kids wouldn't even realize they are synthesizing information and creating new media based on a parody.

  4. I've used video more this year to capture students' project work, science experiments with student narratives, students chorally sharing grammar jingles, etc. The kids have LOVED watching themselves.

I really like the MOST model component of students being able to capture the retelling of a story. Catherine, you are right that this would be a great way to document mastery (and areas where students need improvement). And yes, Kristy, they would love it.

Mike, I like your idea of the school district jumping in to create a pool of resources to pull from. Why recreate the wheel all the time... let's share! :)

  5. I agree that one of the drawbacks to this model is cost (time and money) - it would take a lot of resources (time and money) to create an effective, professional looking, and reputable MOST Environment.
